What is GreenHat?

GreenHat is a community site for people who do security work: pentesters, bug bounty hunters, CTF players, tool builders, and anyone learning the craft. You get a dashboard with discussion categories (tutorials, project showcases, tools, careers, events), topic-based groups (some public, some approval-only, some paid), 1:1 chat, and contests like Typing Tests and coding challenges. No corporate fluff—it’s built for the kind of crowd that cares about vulns, write-ups, and sharing knowledge in a way that stays legal and ethical.

Is GreenHat free?

Signup and most features are free: discussions, groups (that aren’t premium), chat, Typing Tests, and the public leaderboards. Some groups charge a one-time or recurring fee for access; Hacker Cup and Beginner’s Code can be gated behind premium or a premium group. The contest and group pages say when payment is required. We don’t sell your data or run ads; premium and group fees are how we keep the lights on.

What can I post about?

The five categories are Tutorials & Guides, Project Showcase, Tools & Resources, Careers & Jobs, and Events. Content has to be legal and within our Code of Conduct—no unauthorized access, malware, harassment, or hate. We run a server-side filter on posts, replies, and DMs; restricted terms (offensive, sexual, illegal) get blocked. If your message hits one, it won’t send. How do I join a group?

Go to Groups from the nav (or the link on the dashboard). Public groups: one click and you’re in. Restricted groups: you request; the group admin approves or denies—you’ll see the status in your dashboard. Premium groups: you may need to pay a one-time or recurring fee; the group page and checkout flow handle that. We don’t take payment in chat or DMs.

How do reactions work on discussions?

You can react with Like, Helpful, Insightful, or Thanks. One reaction per user per discussion; you can change it or remove it anytime. Counts are visible so authors see what landed. We don’t use them for ranking the feed (yet)—they’re mainly for feedback and community signal.

How does Chat work?

Chat is 1:1 DMs. Search by username to start a thread. There’s a short rate limit between messages (a few seconds per user) to cut spam. We don’t keep chat logs long-term; messages are not stored indefinitely. The same restricted-word filter that applies to discussions and replies runs on chat—if you type a blocked term it’ll be highlighted and the message won’t send. Don’t paste creds or PII.

What are restricted words and why can’t I send some messages?

We keep a server-side list of terms we classify as offensive, sexually explicit, or promoting illegal activity. When you type in a discussion, reply, or DM, anything that matches gets flagged and the message is rejected. The list isn’t public so people don’t game it. Bypassing with spacing, leetspeak, or substitutions is against the rules. If you think something was blocked in error, contact support with context and we’ll review.

Do I have to accept terms and privacy when signing up?

Yes. The signup form has required checkboxes for the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (including the Data Privacy Act where applicable). You can’t create an account without agreeing. If your jurisdiction needs something different we handle it case by case—email legal or privacy if you have a question.

Can admins ban or remove users?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Site admins can remove a user; once removed they lose access and would need a new account to come back. The same email can’t be reused for a period the admin sets (typically 15–30 days) to prevent instant re-join. Group admins can remove members from their group; that doesn’t ban them from the whole site unless a site admin does that separately.

What are the typing tests and coding contests?

Typing Tests are 1-, 3-, or 5-minute speed/accuracy tests; they run all the time and are free. Your best runs show on the leaderboard and you can earn achievements. Hacker Cup and Beginner’s Code are timed coding contests—you type your solution (no copy-paste), and some of them are behind premium or a premium group. Leaderboards let you filter by contest and time window. Check the Contests page and each contest’s own page for rules and access.

Can I change my username?

Yes, once. Go to Profile and edit your username. After you save that change you can’t change it again (we do this to avoid impersonation and confusion). Pick something you’re okay keeping.

How do I report abuse or a rule violation?

Use the Contact form and choose Security & Abuse, or email security@greenhat.com. Include links or screenshots if you have them. We look at every report and don’t share the outcome with the reporter, but we do act on valid reports. For vulns in our platform, same inbox—we do responsible disclosure and won’t shoot the messenger.
